Overview

This course is intended to the undergraduate students of any life Science discipline and those individuals who are all interested in knowing the fundamentals of biotechnology can also take up this course which will help them in doing their specialization in biotechnology in the near future. In this particular course on “Principles of Biotechnology” we are going to familiarise with the basic knowledge of Tissue culture, Molecular biology, rDNA technology, plant transformation and Immunotechnology in five subthemes. Many an occasion, new discoveries in biology have refashioned the trends of thoughts and comprehension. Such landmarks, contributed by several brilliant minds, need to be known particularly in the context of the beginning and growth of biotechnology and so this course starts with the chapter of revisiting the history and concepts of biotechnology. Well the success in understanding of biotechnology principles lies with the awareness of the in vitro culturing of plants through tissue culture principles and techniques, hence the first sub theme of this course makes you to understand the nutritional requirements of TC, the concepts of morphogenesis and the basic types of tissue culture techniques. The second sub theme basics of molecular biology was designed in such a way to give you an over all understanding of the Nucleic Acid structure, DNA processes, the basics of a gene and the DNA sequencing methods. The third sub theme is rDNA technology and in which we are going to explore the fundamentals of recombinant DNA, Examining the vector elements of DNA, Manipulating DNA enzymes and the construction of recombinant DNA molecules. Fourth sub theme is the Plant Transformation dealts with Designing plant transformation, Familiarising with reporter genes and promoters, Analysing methods of direct gene transfer and indirect gene transfer. In fifth sub theme Immunotechnology introduce you to the structure of antibodies, Identifying the structure of an antigen, comparing antibody and antigen, Familiarising with Monoclonal and Polyclonal antibodies and Applying Hybridoma technology. On the outset, no doubt that this course content is very well prepared to suit with the purpose of familiarising biotechnology principles to the non familiar students of various discipline of life sciences.
